What is Matrixyl?

It is a chain of 5 amino acids that copies a small piece of procollagen, the starting form of type 1 collagen, with a fatty acid attached. Research papers call it pal-KTTKS, after its sequence.

The fatty acid is part of the design. A 2014 lab study on skin samples taken from mice looked at what it does to the peptide's stability and how far the peptide moves into the skin.

Matrixyl in cosmetic trials and lab work

  • Human trial, 2005. A 12 week trial in 93 women aged 35 to 55 used a split-face design against a placebo, and measured fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Lab study, 2014. On skin samples taken from mice and kept outside the body, the peptide was tested with and without the fatty acid, for how stable it stayed and how far it moved into the skin layers.
  • Cell study, 2017. Collagen-making skin cells were checked for signs of scar-type change.
  • Review, 2024. A review of skin care ingredients for sun-damaged skin, with peptides among them.

Matrixyl has more human skin data than most cosmetic peptides, but that still means a few small trials. Every one of them is cosmetic research on skin.

How to read this

Matrixyl is a cosmetic ingredient first, and its main human study is a 12 week trial with a split-face design against a placebo. The lab work on skin samples from mice explains why the fatty acid is there. The cell study looks at scar-type changes in a dish. None of this is about anything but skin care, and the human trial is still one study of 93 women.

The Matrixyl paper trail

The 2005 trial ran in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, with women aged 35 to 55 and one side of the face on each cream. The 2017 lab study appeared in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, and the 2024 review in Skin Research and Technology. KTTKS, the letters in its research name, stand for lysine, threonine, threonine, lysine and serine.

Questions about Matrixyl

What has research on Matrixyl looked at?

Skin care research: a 12 week split-face trial in 93 women, plus lab studies on skin samples and skin cells.

What does palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 mean?

Pentapeptide means a chain of 5 amino acids, here Lys-Thr-Thr-Lys-Ser, written KTTKS. Palmitoyl is the fatty acid joined to one end, so researchers write the whole molecule as pal-KTTKS.

How many papers cover palmitoyl pentapeptide-4?

21 PubMed records on 18 October 2026 across its research names, so the record is small. The 2005 trial put a different cream on each side of the face in women aged 35 to 55, which is what split-face means.
